Modern cars monitor themselves constantly. When something goes wrong, they store a fault code and often switch on a warning light. A diagnostic check reads that information.
What happens during diagnostics
A scan tool connects to the car’s diagnostic port, usually under the dashboard. It reads stored and pending fault codes from systems such as engine, gearbox, ABS and airbags, and shows live data from sensors.
A code is not a part number
A code tells you which system or circuit reported a problem. The cause might be the sensor, the wiring, a connector or a mechanical fault elsewhere. That is why good diagnostics includes testing, not just reading codes.
When to get a diagnostic check
- Any warning light on the dashboard
- Rough running, misfires or loss of power
- Gearbox shifting strangely
- Before buying a used car
