Used vs new car spare parts: which should you choose?

Used parts can be a smart choice — for the right parts. Here is how to decide.

Published

When a part fails, you usually have three options: new original (OEM), new aftermarket, or used. Each has its place.

Genuine used parts

An original manufacturer part removed from another vehicle. Good for body panels, lights, mirrors, engines, gearboxes, electrical modules and interior parts. Often better quality than a cheap new copy, at a lower price.

New aftermarket parts

Made by other companies to fit your car. Quality ranges from excellent to poor. Good brands can be a sensible choice for service and wear items.

New original parts

Best fit and quality, but the highest cost. Worth it for safety-critical parts and newer cars.

What should usually be new

Brake pads and discs, tyres, timing belts, filters, and other wear items where the remaining life of a used part is unknown.

When used makes the most sense

Older cars where a new part costs more than the repair is worth, accident repairs on body parts, and major units like engines and gearboxes.
