Engine overheating in the UAE: signs, causes and what to do

An overheating engine can turn a small repair into a big one in minutes. Here is what to do.

Published

High summer temperatures put extra load on your car’s cooling system. When something in that system is weak, overheating is often the result.

Warning signs

  • Temperature gauge rising above normal
  • Temperature warning light or message
  • Steam from under the bonnet
  • Sweet smell of coolant
  • AC suddenly blowing warm (some cars cut AC when hot)

What to do

Pull over safely and switch the engine off. Don’t open the radiator cap while hot — pressurised coolant can cause burns. Let the engine cool and call for help. Driving on can damage the head gasket or cylinder head.

Common causes

Coolant leaks from hoses or the radiator, a failed water pump, a stuck thermostat, a radiator fan that doesn’t switch on, or a blocked radiator. Long climbs, such as the Jebel Hafeet road near Al Ain, can expose a weak system.

Prevention

Check coolant during every service, replace coolant on schedule and fix small leaks early. If your car has overheated, our engine repair team can check for damage.
