Car denting and painting guide: repair, blend or replace?

What actually happens to your car in the body shop, and how to choose the right repair.

Published

Bodywork can seem mysterious. Here is a plain explanation of how denting and painting work, so you can understand your quote.

Step 1: Assess the damage

Is the paint cracked? Is the metal creased or stretched? Is there damage behind the panel? These decide whether the panel can be repaired or should be replaced.

Step 2: Repair or replace

Most dents can be straightened. When a panel is badly creased or torn, replacing it — sometimes with a good used panel — can be cheaper than hours of work.

Step 3: Preparation

The surface is sanded, filled where needed and primed. Good preparation is most of the job and is what makes paint last.

Step 4: Colour matching and blending

Paint is mixed from your paint code and then checked against the car, because sun changes the shade over time. The new paint is often blended into neighbouring panels so the repair is invisible.

Protecting your paint

UAE sun fades and peels clear coat. Park in shade, wash off dust regularly and use wax or sealant.
